Translate My Documents:
Converting a Malaysian driver licence in the Northern Territory
Malaysia is not on the NT list of countries that can transfer without tests, so the theory test, an interim licence and a practical test apply.
You must transfer your overseas licence within 3 months of living in the NT.
The Motor Vehicle Registry asks for an international driving permit, an official translation into English by an authorised translator, or a letter from the licensing authority, if your licence is not in English. Check with the MVR which translators it accepts.
Source: NT Government (nt.gov.au), checked October 2026. Rules change - confirm with the Motor Vehicle Registry before you book.
Malaysian documents for the Northern Territory agencies
Births, deaths, marriages and name changes in the Northern Territory are registered by Births, Deaths and Marriages (NT Government). If you are giving them a Malaysian birth or marriage certificate - for a name change, for example - we translate it into English. The same certified translations are used for visa and citizenship applications with the Department of Home Affairs, and for Australian passport applications.
